RAMSEY WINCH | FORESTRY & WOODCHIPPER APPLICATIONS
A Winch Designed for Woodchipper Applications: What to Know About the Terrain 4000
The Timberline Series Terrain 4000 is a hydraulic planetary winch built specifically for woodchipper use, with engineering decisions that reflect how these machines operate in the field.
The Gap Between the Pile and the Feed
On most woodchipper job sites, the machine itself isn’t the bottleneck. Feed speed, blade sharpness, and drum performance are well-managed. What takes time and effort is getting material from where it falls to where the chipper can process it.
A winch mounted to the chipper changes that workflow. It reduces the physical demands on the crew and keeps the machine fed more consistently.
The Ramsey Timberline Series Terrain 4000 is purpose-built for woodchipper use, engineered specifically to reduce the physical demands on the operator and keep the machine fed more consistently throughout the shift.
The Terrain 4000 is a hydraulic planetary winch with a 4,000 lb. rated line pull. It mounts to the woodchipper and is designed to pull brush and woody material toward the feed chute.
It is available in short drum or standard drum configurations depending on the machine and installation requirements. The clutch handle is adaptable, which helps with mounting variations across different chipper makes and models.
In addition, the Terrain winch is built with the AR LightGuide station to improve accuracy and product quality. The core purpose of the AR LightGuide system, specifically for the manual assembly process, is to serve as an intelligent visual guidance tool that eliminates errors and maximizes efficiency.
It carries a 3-year warranty with registration and is manufactured in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Key Features and Why They Matter in the Field
Free-Spool Pull as Low as 4 lbs
On the Terrain 4000, free-spool pull is as low as 4 lbs. That means an operator, with little effort can run cable out to the material with one hand, without fighting the drum. Over the course of a full day of pulling, that reduction in effort adds up.
Field-Adjustable Drag Brake
The drag brake controls line tension during free-spool and helps prevent slack or backlash on the drum. As the brake wears or conditions change, it may require periodic adjustment.
On the Terrain 4000, that adjustment is made in the field without removing the winch or sending it for service. The operator accesses the brake directly on the machine and sets it as needed. For crews working remote sites or tight schedules, this keeps the winch in service without interruption.
Synthetic Rope or Wire Cable
The Terrain 4000 accommodates both synthetic rope and wire cable. Recommended in three options: 5/16”, 3/8”, and 7/16” Ø.
Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle, with no risk of wire splinter injuries. Wire cable offers higher abrasion resistance in applications where the line contacts rock, bark, or rough ground regularly. The choice depends on the crew’s working conditions and preference.
Short or Standard Drum
Drum selection affects both cable capacity and the physical footprint of the winch on the machine. The short drum is suited for installations where space is limited or cable run requirements are shorter. The standard drum accommodates more cable capacity and works for applications where the operator needs to reach material further from the chipper.
Consult the owner manual for cable capacity specs on each configuration.
Adaptable Clutch Handle
The clutch handle can be configured to suit different operator positions and machine mounting orientations. This is useful when integrating the winch across multiple chipper models or when operators have specific ergonomic requirements for how the clutch handles.
3-Year Warranty with Registration (Register Here)
The Terrain 4000 offers 18-month standard coverage with an additional 18 months when registered. This covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions.
Made in the USA
The Terrain 4000 is designed and manufactured at Ramsey’s facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Domestic production supports consistent quality control, predictable lead times, and parts availability through Ramsey’s US-based aftermarket network.
Installation and Integration
The Terrain 4000 is a hydraulic winch and requires connection to the chipper’s existing hydraulic system. Installation requirements, including mounting points, hydraulic flow, and pressure specs, are detailed in the owner manual (Part No. 914428).
For OEMs integrating the Terrain 4000 as a factory-fit option, Ramsey’s engineering team can assist with application requirements, mounting configurations, and controls compatibility. Contact Ramsey Winch customer service department at [email protected] for a distributor near you.
The adaptable clutch handle and dual drum options give integrators flexibility when fitting the winch across different chipper platforms without custom fabrication.
Typical Applications
The Terrain 4000 is suited for woodchipper operations across a range of forestry and vegetation management applications:
- Tree care and arborist operations: branch removal, pruning debris, storm cleanup
- Land clearing: brush, saplings, and mixed woody debris on site
- Right-of-way and utility vegetation management
- Municipal forestry and parks operations
- Biomass and pulpwood operations requiring frequent material feed
It is not designed for applications outside woodchipper use — for other forestry pulling or recovery applications, refer to Ramsey’s broader product line at ramseywinch.com/products.
